Teaching 2026-2027
Epistemologies of the Ocean

The seminar continues the topics addressed in 2025-2026. What kind of knowledge can we acquire about the ocean, and how do we acquire it? If the ocean, this great global connector, is one, the human communities that actively interact with it are many, as are the practices and norms that govern marine space. Every ocean actor (or spectator) faces the problem of knowing their object. While there are cases of immediate knowledge, of immersion, where the agent’s body is in direct contact with the environment, most of our interactions with the sea take place through instruments: surfboards, sailing and motor boats, ships, fishing boats, nets, harpoons, oil wells, sea walls; and more specifically through instruments of representation: probes, compasses, images, narratives, anecdotes, maps, diagrams.
