Research

My research sits at the intersection of visual studies, philosophy and science studies. My main field of research is what I call environmental objects: beyond the reach of human perception as unified objects, they are delimited, defined and handled by science and by governing bodies, first among them the Ocean.

An artist-author for over fifteen years alongside my academic work, I practise photography within research, to develop interdisciplinary tools of art-science mediation and to document the situated inquiries I carry out.

PhD defended within the Arts, Sciences, Societies programme of Institut ACTE (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) on 22 February 2027: Océan 1:1. Les inscriptions visuelles et l’institution d’un objet environnemental.

Visual studies

Visual analysis of representations of the Ocean, both diachronic and synchronic. Over the long term, a study of the social construction of the Ocean through its images, maps and instruments. In the contemporary period, an analysis of the production and circulation of images around deep-sea mining, based on visual coding of the corpora (MAXQDA): controversy analysis and visual framing analysis.

Philosophy of science

Epistemology and ontology of the representations of environmental objects produced by scientific apparatuses. Zoning maps and the institution of a territorialisation of the Ocean. Epistemology of ocean modelling.

Science and technology studies (STS)

Laboratory ethnography of the concepts and norms surrounding images within a quantitative plankton imaging platform, the Institut de la mer de Villefranche-sur-Mer (PIQv): observation, interviews, qualitative coding. Controversy analysis and actor mapping, grounded theory and situated studies.

Map of the actors of deep-sea mining.
